cue-splitter Editor's Review
cue-splitter is a nice and useful OS X application.Medieval CUE Splitter is a well acclaimed audio track separator, as its name implies, it also enables users to split APE to independent audio tracks based on its associated.cue file. Although the old version 1.2 still works, it's recommended to install the latest version on Windows 10 below. Faasoft CUE Splitter is designed for both Windows users and Mac users to split CUE associated audio file like split MP3 CUE, split FLAC CUE, split M4A CUE, split APE CUE, split WAV CUE, Split OGG CUE, MPC, WV, TAK, TTA, AMR, AAC, AIFF, AU, RA, etc. With it, you will never have trouble in how to play long audio files.
The name of the software is pretty suggestive. It allows you to easily split large MP3 files, such as mixes or single file output disc rips, based on a CUE sheet.
A CUE Sheet, also known as CUE file is a metadata file which describes the position of the tracks of a CD/DVD. They are stored as plain text files, so you can modify them with any ordinary text editor.
Some media players can use this kind of files in order to virtually split the tracks if you load a large audio file into the playlist. When a solution like this is not useful, cue-splitter is the kind of application that helps you.
cue-splitter actually splits the large file into many small audio files which are the tracks from the original one. Because the MP3 encoding doesn't use special headers, the splitting is done very fast as the application doesn't need to re-encode the audio frames.
Even though the producer refers to this product as to an MP3 splitter, I had the curiosity of testing it as a FLAC/WAV splitter because these loss-less formats are pretty popular. The test failed as I expected. The application loaded the MP3 file which was in the same directory as the FLAC/WAV ones when I used the dedicated CUE Sheets for the specific formats. It behaved well by failing back nicely.
Pluses: it allows you to easily split large MP3 files by using this application and a CUE Sheet. The interface is very intuitive and usable.
Drawbacks / flaws: it would be nice to have support for other formats such as FLAC or WAV.
In conclusion: the application is very good and available for free at the same time. However, the producer released it under a donationware flavor, so, in order to support the future development of cue-splitter, any donations would be welcome.

How to split FLAC CUE

Tips
- When you open directory with *.cue file, AuI ConverteR automatically add CUE file into input-file list and don't add other audio files.
- If you open audio file in the directory, use Open files button and select only audio file(s) (not *.cue). If you select file and cue, cue will added only.
Sound quality matters
Bit perfect splitting
There are losses always when:
- resampling is applied or
- lossless file (WAV, FLAC, DSF) converted to lossy (mp3, AAC, etc.) or
- DSD files converterd to PCM or back.
If bit depth is increased (example: 16 to 24 or 32 bit, 24 to 32 bit), there are not quality losses into AuI ConverteR.

Accurate split with 1 sample precision
Decoding and reencoding of FLAC files are lossless actions.
But without decoding and reencoding FLAC file may be splitted with frame (data block) precision.
It can cause placement of next track fragment to end of previous thack.
To avoid the issue AuI ConverteR split files by marks into cue-file with precision 1 sample (exact track border) without quality losses.
When mp3 (or other lossy) audio file is splitted to mp3 (or other lossy), to split with 1 sample precision there is re-encoding is happens. And target files have some losses (audible or not, we can't say exactly), comparing with original stuff.
But for cases, where splitting per audio data block cause sound penetration of next track begin to end of previous one, splitting per 1 sample may be more desirable.

Troubleshooting
Codecs
As rule, .cue and .flac files should have similar file names. Otherwise, AuI ConverteR try to found appropriate big audio file automatically.
Warning: In version earlier 9.2, before CUE + other than FLAC, WAV, AIFF, DSF file, open this file type directly to auto downloading and installing of codec.
Wrong symbols in converted files
If converted files contains wrong symbols in:
- text metadata (album, performer, track name, etc.) or
- file name,
in Settings > Metadata > select proper value in 'CUE file encoding' list ('Local' is default value).
